Despite the year delay in the crowning of a new Miss UVI, St. Croix's campus proceeds to bring the posh and prestigious ambassadorial competition to the stage as three young women vie for the coveted title. The competition will be held on March 28, 2009 at 7pm.
According to St. Croix, campus president of the Student Government Association and chairperson of the Queens Committee, Jessica Taylor, and the decision to give St. Croix another chance was made by Student Government Association (SGA) executive body.
To her understanding, last year the issue was not enough funding. However, this year will be different, according to Taylor. The Queens Committee has already “sent out sponsorship letters in order to aid with the cost of the competition,” Taylor said. They also held their first on campus fundraiser—a carwash—done in the back of Student Activities last semester, she said.
On February 13, 2009, the Queens Committee held their second on campus fundraiser in which they hosted a formal Cocktail Party for UVI’s faculty and staff, Taylor said. The funds raised will “go toward the success of the competition,” she said.
The Queens Committee has already hosted a retreat for the contestants held February 13-15, 2009. “This retreat included workshops such as social grace and protocol, modeling and dressing for success and a photo shoot held at Fort Christiansted,” Taylor said. Another retreat is scheduled for March 6-8, 2009 on the St. Thomas campus.
The contestants made an appearance at the 2009 Agriculture and Food Fair held on St. Croix. There they had an opportunity to introduce themselves to the general community, Taylor said.
Overall, the retreat was a success according to Taylor. She said, “the committee and the contestants were very pleased with the workshops and the activities that transpired throughout the retreat.
According to Taylor, “the student body is not attracted to taking on leadership roles.” They usually become active when they see something happening, she said. That is why she is the Chairperson along with being SGA president. “I took on the role, no one applied for that position,” Taylor said.
St. Thomas campus is being very helpful, by giving tips and suggestions, Taylor said. They (St. Thomas Queens Committee) been giving the “task of completing the booklet for the show and they gladly accepted the responsibility,” she said.
Renee Wilkinson, Chairperson of the Queens Committee on the St. Thomas campus, said, “Both committees are getting along well. Right now we are focusing on having a spectacular competition."
The contestants are Ms. Carice Glasgow and Ms. Christina Clement from the St. Croix campus and M s. JaeDee Caines from the St. Thomas campus.
The theme is “Charting the Coarse to Excellence”.
