Gorgeous Day UVI Community,

My name is Jessica Taylor, your current President of the Student Government Association (SGA) here on the St. Croix campus. I do hope your semester is going as well as planned. It is my pleasure to be a part of this prestige group to serve the University of the Virgin Islands’ student body.

SGA is made up of twelve (13) individuals. I urge all students to get familiar with these names and their faces; we are your extra mouth pieces to a successful experience here at the University of the Virgin Islands. This semester, SGA has a calendar filled with both social and academic activities. Please find attached the SGA Calendar. We are interested in urging students to become involved and show school spirit through activities they initiate as well as those initiated by us; one of our initial initiatives was the Presidential Inaugural Watch. We were excited to see the turn out of individuals who attended the Inaugural Watch on the St. Croix Campus. Another event that we executed was a Student Forum / Ice Social on Wednesday, February 11, 2009; we were pleased with the attendance and are currently addressing those concerns. SGA is geared towards working efficiently for the student body. We rely heavy on students to voice their concerns whether at forums or on a personal basis so that we are up-to-date with the issues that occur on campus.

Your Student Government Association has been busy this semester preparing for several events. SGA, along with its sub-committees are currently working on executing the SOS (Shadow Our Students) program, scheduled for March 18, 2009, Miss UVI Ambassadorial Competition, scheduled for March 28, 2009, and Spring Ball scheduled for April 18, 2009. These are only some of the major projects that we are currently working on.  During this month of February, Black History Month, you will see our Black Heritage Committee engaged in implementing several activities on campus. Students should also look forward to participating in the Spring Olympics schedule for March 20-22, 2009 on the St. Thomas Campus. This is an opportunity for students to compete with the St. Thomas through sports.

One of our goals this semester engages more collaborative projects with the St. Thomas Campus. Our first attempt was very successful as both campus joined on St. Thomas for a leadership conference. This initiative served as a tool to help us serve you better as well as facilitate greater collaborative efforts between campuses.

These are only a few highlights. The Student Government Association is going to be working hard for the students this year; if you have any concerns, or would like to become involved, never hesitate to stop by our office. We stand ready to help.

I leave you this quote from the keynote speaker Jonathan Sprinkles, “Your GPA is not a measurement of how smart you are, it is a measurement of how focus you are.”
