Letter from the Editors

It is evident that the theme of change in 2009 has been well established as we all turn toward the future with hope. It is no different for us, the two new Managing Editors of the UVI VOICE, who have been put in place to bridge the gap and gauge the pulse of our two-campus University.
Additionally, we also welcome the coming of Dr. Gillian Royes, our new advisor with who we hope to move into the Spring semester of 2009 and beyond with stories and features of relevance to our fellow students.
Unfortunately, we have faced several challenges including the largest factor of all newspapers-- the budget. We were informed that we can put out two 8-page issues or three 4-pages issues, and this budget must last us until October. We had to make some big decisions. Do we go completely online? Do we publish in print? Should we do the 4-page issues or the 8-pages? Do we find a local printer? Should we go out and sell ads?
Although we wanted out first issue to be in print, we decided that we could not put it off any longer; our first issue must be online.
As you will notice, there will be slight modifications to the paper. The UVI community will continue to be informed, entertained, and empowered through the University’s award-winning paper.
We will continue to highlight the progress, concerns, and achievement of staff, faculty, students, and organizations of the University of the
We hope to combine online and print editions. Breaking news will be published online as soon as possible. Our print versions will be found online.
Our job as managing editors will be a learning experience. We will consult one another when making decisions and to the best of our knowledge.
Continuing in the footsteps of those who have helped build and keep the UVI VOICE alive, we encourage the response and contribution of our fellow students in order to ensure that the UVI community’s voice is heard.
We cannot do this alone. We rely on the feedback and support of our readers. We are short staffed. We need reporters, photographers, creative writers, artists, and concerned students who wish to inform the rest of the UVI community.
We have accepted a great challenge to uphold the standards of the UVI VOICE. Our predecessors have certainly set high standards in reporting and keeping the student body along with the UVI community informed.
Together, we plan to uphold the quality work that has won the UVI VOICE significant recognition at the Annual Black College Communications Association Conferences.
We will do everything we can to keep both campuses informed. Moreover, we refuse to let the VOICE of UVI fall by the wayside.
Let your voices be heard!

I'm sure you can find advertising from local businesses that would love to be able market to the UVI community.
Example Dominoes, Pizza Hut , Hair salons, and Night clubs,

Sana and Donasia:
Congrats on your first issue! You have both made UVI proud. I want you to know that your many long hours (into the night)-- gathering the stories, chasing down leads, editing articles -- have all paid off, at last. (Continued…)

I love the honesty- I do agree with D. Psyko. I'm sure you can get advertising fees from companies which students here do patronize daily.
Best wishes to both of you, much respect. (Continued…)
